When to Adopt Cloud Computing: It is later than you think!
TRIGGER: Cloud Computing changes everything, when should an IT leader adopt Cloud Computing and why?
SETTING: Many IT Operations (ITO) leaders are unsure about Cloud Computing. Not all firms can afford to be risk takers -- and some simply must be first to market. Here we answer the question about who should be investing in Cloud Computing right now.
SUMMARY: As ITOs adopt Cloud Computing it is diffusing into the market. The pattern of adoption and diffusion can help you "zero in" to make an informed decision right for your firm and industry. Marquis research shows that Cloud Computing has crossed the chasm and with 39% diffusion is approaching majority status. Three quarters of firms with the largest or most specialized operations are using Cloud Computing. 70% of them plan to expand usage, meaning that they have figured out the best applications for Cloud Computing, have identified both the risks, and challenges you need to worry about and solutions to them. For this reason two out of three Deliberate Firm Types are now "following the pack." Daring, Respectful and Deliberate Firm Types (see Figure 2) must act now or risk losing competitive advantage.
